The English Reaction to the New US Bill
Everything that happens in the United States affects the rest of the globe and the gambling industry is no exception. The United States and the United Kingdom have been traveling on completely opposite paths regarding internet gambling for several years now. The culmination of these extreme poles have been the passing of the new US bill on the eve of the UK Gambling Act coming into effect.
The British have been working for several years now towards a regulated gambling industry which would give the government tighter control over the market but still allow people to take up their favorite gambling pastimes. The UK Gambling Act aims to protect the gambling consumer and at the same time bring in millions of pounds for the British government in revenue and taxes.
At a recent conference at Royal Ascot, the British Culture Secretary, Tessa Jowell, rapped the new US law and stated that history books proved that Prohibition simply didn’t work. She called for the United States to reconsider its new legislation and follow the rest of the world in finding a solution for the real problems facing internet gambling such as underage players and fraud.
