“You Won My Jackpot” and Other Slot Myths

No matter how rational a slot lover may be it is almost certain that he/she believes in at least of few of the slot myths. Most slot machine aficionados swear they can tell when a machine is ready to pay out. Slot myths are numerous and are about the best days of the week to play or the best time to play. There are even slot myths about the room location for the premium slot machines. Slot myths are certainly a lot of fun but do any of them contain grains of truth?

Slot myth #1: If a machine hasn’t paid a jackpot in awhile that machine is due for a score. Slot machines use random number generators (RNG). There is no need to survey the casino waiting for people to walk away from slot machines that haven’t paid off for a considerable period of time. It’s a very old but also an untrue slot myth that a machine is “due”. A person can win a jackpot and the very next pull of the lever or push of the button another jackpot might come up. A slot can also go for an extended period of time without a jackpot. Winning at slots is entirely random.

Slot myth #2: Casinos place the best slot machines in certain locations within the casino such as the end of a row or near the entrances and exits. Remember this slot mantra: Winning at slots is totally random therefore there are no winning machines; even if there were, it is not casino policy to place such machines in certain spots. Hot machines in hot locations is just another slot myth. The person who perpetuates this slot myth probably hit a winner on a machine as he/she left the casino; if so, that was just luck. Luck is the one constant of slots.

Slot myth #3: Look for a hot machine, that is, look for one that actually has a warm temperature. Once you find a warm machine use warm coins to play. What is the slot mantra? Slots are governed by random number generators. The temperature of the machine and the coins, whether that temperature is hot or whether it is cold has nothing to do with winning. The person who started that slot myth was sitting under the casino heat vent holding coins in his/her hand. If the person had been sitting under the air conditioning vent instead the slot machine result would have been the same.

No doubt about it, playing slot machines is fun. However, players should remember to approach the games as entertainment and to gamble only a set amount of money which they can afford to lose.
