Slot Types
In casinos, you will usually find many different slot types. There are traditional slot machines, video slot machines, as well as slot machines with progressive payouts. Slot types include all different denominations, from penny slots all the way up to five and even 10 dollar slot machines.
While the slot types may vary in appearance, cost, and payout, the mechanisms by which they all work are surprisingly similar. The numbers or patterns that show up on the wheel or on the screen are generated by a RNG, or a random number generator.
Most states require that slots pay out a certain percentage of what they take in over the life of the slot machine, that number ranges between 85%-92%. That means that no matter what kind of slot you are playing, over the life of the machine it has to pay out about $.9 for every $1.00 that gets put into it.

One of the most immediately noticeable differences among the various slot types is the appearance of the actual machine itself. While many slots are still the 'one-arm bandit' with the pull lever on the right side and three reels in the middle, more and more slots are based on computer screens.
Indeed, the 'one-armed bandit' slot types generally don't work that way anymore; the reels are activated by a button now instead of a pull on the lever.
Furthermore, while most traditional slot types have three reels, where you need a certain combination of three patterns in order to win, new video slot machines often have 5, 6, or more spaces where a given pattern may need to go.
Of course, the payout rate is not different and the chances of winning on a video slot machine are not different over time than winning on a traditional slot machine.
Another variance among the slot types is how much money you can bet and if that increases your chance of winning. On traditional slot machines with the mechanical reels, you can generally bet 5 up to five lines: 3 lines across (upper, middle and lower) and the diagonal lines.
If you are at a quarter slot machine, for example, you could bet up to $1.25 on each spin. If you get a winning combination on any of the lines, you win. Oftentimes, the more money you bet, the higher your payout will be.
Some video machines offer you the opportunity to play up to 20 or even 25 lines. The lines can be in all sorts of combinations. If you are playing a quarter video slot machine and are playing all the lines, you could potentially be wagering $5 with each pull. This is similar to, but not exactly the same as, a progressive.
If you pay extra money to play a progressive pot, that means that the extra money, along with extra 'progressive' money from other slot machines goes into a bank. At some point, soeone paying extra to play on the progressive slot machine will win that extra money.
There will be a display near most progressive slot machines stating how much the progressive jackpot is up to. Both mechanical and video slot types can be progressive.
